A single apple was photographed from various positions, then brought into Photoshop and animated across three panels. This is what happens when Cezanne discovers rasterization…

THE EXPERIMENT: Taking a page from my own work in the realm of experimental text, this sequence makes use of the notion of “process”, by taking and repeating a “source file” through a series of filters and gates.

  • A sequence of ten boxes was drawn on a grid using the Metallic swatches.
  • Over a series of 11 steps, a variety of filters were applied (see captions for more).

blackletter
THE EXPERIMENT:

  • A pixelated parody of an ancient script font called German Blackletter was created by tracing an example alphabet, using black squares on a grid.
  • For #2, this was given rounded corners, then multiplied with green stroke colors to create the “glow”.
  • #3: Playing around with the “dashed line” feature of the Stroke options, using a 1-pixel dash at various spacings and stroke weights.

Horrorbush

horrorbush.jpgTHE EXPERIMENT:

  • A photo of George W. Bush was downloaded from Google Image Search, and the background was removed using the Magic Wand tool.
  • The Stamp Tool was then used to create multiple copies of various facial features, starting from the center and moving out.
  • The resulting layer was duplicated several times, shifted in position on each layer, and changed to “Multiply” or “Overlay”-style transparencies.

THE EXPERIMENT:

  • A series of Scatter Brushes were created, 8 in total. These are each either a black or white square at varying opacities and brush spacing.
  • The words “RUM DYAD AGAIN” were created and outlined.
  • Each word was repeated horizontally a number of times, with each repetition given a different scatter brush.

THE EXPERIMENT:

  • Take a photo of a building, preferably with multiple colors on a nice day with good light.
  • Select small, narrow sections of the photo with the marquee tool.
  • Stretch these out using Tranform (Apple-T for Mac users). Work from the center out.
  • Repeat, including stretching out previously stretched-out areas.
